Just for fun

I had this little idea to make a TV pincushion. I'm calling it the Idiot Box pincushion. I have had this idea for a few weeks. It's been under construction for about 2. I'm not sure why i hem-hawed for so long. It really didn't take very long. I guess I was afraid it would be to plain, but it turned out OK. It could use a little more, but I'm not sure what?? So, I have a question. What do you stuff your pincushions with? I read somewhere to stuff very tightly with cotton stuffing to make your pins go in easily. I used cotton balls...close enough, right? let me tell ya, either my pins are very dull, or this is incorrect info. My pin's don't go in easily.

Hope you like!

  1. I LOVE it! So cute and unique! i use silica sand in my pincushions. You need to have a lining OR just iron a tricot interfacing on the wrong side of your pattern pieces. Some people use ground up walnut shells. ~Jeanne

    1. Thanks! I lined it with batting so it wouldn't be lumpy. Would that be good enough? I guess I need to look up silica sand.

  2. Love it, especially the little tacks for dials! I use poly stuffing because I've got a lot of it. It flattens over time, and might need to be opened again to add more. I've seen a lot of recommendations for crushed walnut shells but have never tried it.

    1. I might try the shells. I'm not allergic to nuts. I just wondered if they're good for you pins or not.

  3. That is so cute! I haven't made a pincushion yet so I don't know about the stuffing but I'll be interested to read what the other commenter's say.

  4. Wow, that's amazing! So creative! I'd use teddy bear stuffing (fibrefill) but I think I've heard of people using silicone sand to keep their pins sharp??? Google it though, don't trust me!

  6. I LOVE IT, just Like it IS! but if you did want to add anything to the next one..what fun it would be to put some hand stitching on the TV screen..hehe. I use all kinds of filling... Fiber Fill... Sand.. crushed walnut shells...Plastic pellets. What ever I can get my hands on ...everything works just fine. If you use sand or walnut.. I recommend making a beanbag out of it and putting the bag inside your project.

    1. Thank you for the suggestions! This pincushion could definantly be made in different ways. Fussy cut fabric for the screen, those dots on selveges for the knobs, regular buttons for the knobs. I even have a fabric that could look like white snow for the screen. Aaaah, so many ideas, so little time.

    1. Thank you! I also thought of regular buttons, or those colorful selvege dots for the knobs. But I really like how the snaps look. :)

  11. Very cute indeed! What a clever idea. I've heard that the bedding material sold for reptiles in pet shops is crushed walnut shells - I keep meaning to buy some to try (for the pincushions I mean - I don't have any repptiles!)!
