Purse Palooza 2012 wallet

Here is my second entry for the Purse Palooza 2012.  I finished this last night to match my Emmaline Bag I completed for the challenge. I didn't realize that I could also enter the wallet :D
I used the tutorial from Confessions of a Fabricaholic. You can find it here.

What I learned about making wallets: It's not easy. You need interfacing for structure, but to much interfacing is not easy to sew. The main problem comes when you get to the end and turn it. Getting those corners turned is a challenge in itself. Then, trying to get all of those layers under your presser foot is almost impossible! They should make a higher presser foot. Do they???

My first attempt at making a wallet i used the Traveler Passport Wallet Pattern. I couldn't get it under my presser foot . I think where I went wrong is I interfaced it to death! I may have used to heavy of interfacing, or maybe just didn't need it on every layer.

The second time around, I eliminated the interfacing on my seam allowances. I also eliminated it all together on the credit card slots. On the CC slots, I just double folded the fabric. Live and learn. I will know better next time:)

    1. It was a learning experience! And heed my warnings! the pattern has 1/2 in seams. Cut your interfacing minus the 1/2 in. seams. If you have the interfacing in the seams, it's just way to much bulk.Good luck;) It's really not to bad. Turning it out and the final top stitch is the hardest part.

  2. Love the wallet! Thanks for the tips. I just getting ready to make some credit card or punch card holders for our church bazaar. I'll be careful with the interfacing! ~Jeanne

  4. Ok, what a fantastic set!! Lovely!! Many sewing machines do let you lift the presser foot for sewing on thick layers. If I open my side/end cover of my sewing machine, where you can see all of the crazy goings on in there... there is a lever with numbers from 0 to 3. You can lift this for different amounts of pressure. Also, if I lift my presser foot lever up past where it normal sits in the up position, it has a little extra lift it does for me to slide thick things under. It's possible you might have this option too! Janelle

    1. Thanks for the advise! My machine does have adjustable pressure for the foot. I didn't think to try that until I was done:P . Luckily, once I finagled the wallet under the foot, my machine didn't have a bit of trouble getting the needle through the layers;) But I was thinking, I have a high shank for my presser feet. Maybe I could get a low shank foot just to use for lots of layers, because that would bring the foot up. If it is not to drastic of a distance, it could work(as long as the layers are thick enough).......hmmmmm. It might be worth a few bucks just to try it out.It sure beats buying another machine that has an extra lift on the presser foot(I know thay make them) I may just do that..haha :)
