Lost Data

I got the Lost Data finished EARLY this week! I think I got some redemption from Jagged Lines. What helped me is one, to WATCH THE VIDEO! This design can be a bit tricky when you are meeting the jagged lines! And two, I drew a sort of grid to keep the design reigned in a bit.

Hope you can see the lines. they were hard to photograph on this light color!

I'm working on my color layout for my FMQ sampler quilt. Here is the first layout.

I thought is could be better, so I thought about another way. Instead of putting the color families another way instead of on the horizon. The problem with this layout is the middle row. I had 5 of each color family except for green and yellow. Green I had 6 and yellow,2. My lack of experience has led me to this mistake. But my mistake has led me to a revelation. The importance to planning a quilt. I really didn't have a clear plan in mind at all except the square size, and different FMQ designs.

To hide this I thought maybe If I put the color families on the diagonal??

Yes! Much better! See??

In the meantime, i finished my binding with little of 2yrds of fabric to spare! I had 4 triangles left! Whew, talk about cutting it close! I had no idea that QAYG binding would take so much fabric! I used about 50 in on the binding strips used to piece the squares and rows together, and all I had was 20in left for the actual binding! I found a formula for figuring out how much fabric you will need for binding. You figure out the square root of your total perimeter of your quilt, plus 10in. This formula is for bias binding, and it also depends how you cut it. I use the envelope method, so I would suggest to add 20in to the calculation. Anyhoo, thats all for now!

    1. Very close! Wait until you see it! I pieced one row and I am VERY happy with my binding choice:)

  2. Layout always kills me on colored blocks. I fuss with it and fuss with it and usually end up throwing the thing in my UFO bin because I can't decide what I like.

As for planning ahead, start keeping graph paper, colored pencils, pens, and regular pencils in a bin or box near your kitchen table. Whenever you feel like planning, pull out the box and color your quilt on graph paper. It really helps to be able to see what you're doing and plan ahead.

    1. I'm always so anxious to get to the quilting, I spend little time with the color design. It's a necessary step I don't think I will skimp on anymore. As for the colored pencils, I have to track down mine. My daughter is very artistic and has taken some of my art supplies over! But I fully support her creativity! I took her to the art store to show her just how expensive those prismacolors are! At least she keeps them in a box and not scattered on the floor. We just have to hunt for the box sometimes:/

    1. Thanks Pat! It's turning out to be a fun quilt! Even if my planning wasn't so great.

  4. Your lost data quilting looks awesome.

Now that you mention about binding for QAYG method, hmmm time to reevaluate whether I should finish my SewCalGal's FMQ challenge this way or just put a new quilt top together.

Would like to see how your QAYG came along.

    1. Oh don't worry. I will post pics. I'm really enjoying the process of making a QAYG quilt! If you got Leah's Craftsy class, she shows you how to do it. Plus I think she has free online videos. And I love the binding I picked out. It's gonna look great!

  6. This looks absolutely great. Love the solid colour. I actually think it looks better if you do not exactly have an even amount of the same colour. For me it adds interest.

    1. design and color I struggle with, so it pleases me when I come up with a scheme that I really love. I don't have the patience to fuss and fuss with it, so I'm glad I came up with a color combination on the second try;) And I agree about the eveness. It's to predictable:)
